The first frosty windshield always seems to arrive on a morning when everyone is running late. Give yourself a calmer start with a short preparation session before winter settles into West Michigan.

Start with the owner’s manual

Find the maintenance schedule and note anything overdue. Make a short list of warning lights, unusual noises, slow starts or visibility problems to discuss with a qualified technician. A checklist helps you organize questions; it does not replace an inspection.

Check the basics before the coldest mornings

Check tire pressures when tires are cold, using the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressures on the door label or in the manual. Inspect visible tire condition and have damage or uneven wear evaluated. Check the spare if equipped; its pressure requirement may differ.

Have the battery checked if starting has become sluggish. Test exterior lights while safely parked. Check wiper performance and use washer fluid appropriate for freezing temperatures. Follow the manual when checking fluids; never open a hot cooling system.

Give your roadside kit a home

Keep a scraper, flashlight, warm blanket, gloves, phone charger and appropriate emergency supplies where you can reach them. Check that batteries work and replace expired supplies. Choose a secure storage spot so loose objects do not move around the cabin.

Make preparation a family habit

Pick one weekend morning to check the vehicles your household uses. Ask a newer driver to find the tire-pressure label and the manual. That small exercise can be more useful than simply reminding them to “be careful.”

Before a longer drive, check weather and road conditions and leave room in your plans to delay travel. Preparation helps, but it cannot make unsafe conditions safe.
