A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Gas Pump

The Science, The Tricks, & The Laughs Behind The Numbers

Minimum car mileage standards are something we've all seen plastered on window stickers at dealerships—those numbers that claim how many miles per gallon (mpg) your next car will supposedly get. But behind these seemingly simple numbers is a history filled with oil crises, scientific ingenuity, creative testing hacks, and a few funny mishaps along the way.

Why Minimum Mileage Standards Exist

The concept of minimum car mileage was first established back in the 1970s, during the 1973 oil crisis. For further reading on the oil crisis and its impact on fuel economy standards, you can refer to sources like the U.S. Department of Energy's history of the oil crisis or the Environmental Protection Agency's CAFE standards overview (https://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy). Faced with skyrocketing oil prices and dwindling supplies, leaders in the United States realized they needed to take action to reduce fuel consumption. This led to the creation of the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards in 1975.  (https://www.nhtsa.gov/laws-regulations/corporate-average-fuel-economy). The goal? To ensure that cars rolling off the production line were more efficient, saving both money for consumers and fuel for the nation.

These standards have evolved over time, and today, every car manufacturer must meet certain minimum mpg standards averaged across their entire fleet. This regulatory push set the stage for increasingly creative and, sometimes, downright funny approaches to mileage testing.

Mileage Testing: From Lab Tests to the Highway

When calculating car mileage, manufacturers put their vehicles through a series of tests that aim to represent real-world conditions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) outlines the procedures and protocols for these tests, which are available at (https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/how_tested.shtml). The main methods include the use of dynamometers (essentially treadmills for cars) and specific driving cycles like the Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) for city driving and the Highway Fuel Economy Test (HWFET) for open roads.

But here’s where it gets interesting: these lab numbers don’t always match up with what drivers see on the road. In fact, lab results are often adjusted downwards by 10-20% to account for variables like traffic, road conditions, or even unpredictable events—like the occasional laboratory hamster making its home under the hood (yes, that supposedly really happened!).

Quirky Mileage Testing Anecdotes

1. The Tape Trick

Back in the day, some manufacturers used tape to cover body seams during testing to reduce drag and boost aerodynamics. While this worked well for the test results, it wasn’t exactly practical for a car that needed to withstand normal driving—unless, of course, you wanted to drive around with duct tape all over your car. Unsurprisingly, this little trick was soon banned.

2. "Feather Foot" Drivers

Mileage testers have long employed so-called "feather foot" drivers—test drivers known for barely touching the gas pedal in an attempt to get the absolute best fuel efficiency numbers. These drivers are known for accelerating so slowly that, if they were on a real road, they'd probably get honked at… a lot. This approach, while effective in testing, is laughably unrealistic for everyday drivers who have places to be and aren’t competing in a "slowest acceleration contest."

3. Weight Loss Tricks

In a bid to get the highest mileage numbers, some manufacturers would strip test cars of everything non-essential. Spare tire? Gone. Stereo system? Nope. Air conditioning compressor belt? Definitely removed—just to ensure the AC didn’t accidentally kick on. These weight-reduced vehicles were basically hollowed-out shells, leaving testers to joke, "Sure, this car gets 40 mpg… if you’re okay with zero comforts."

4. Rolling Downhill for Science

It’s said that early mileage tests could’ve just as easily been called "rolling downhill competitions". Some test drivers would joke that, with the right downhill slope, you could claim amazing mileage numbers. The absurdity of using "perfect hill" conditions became an ongoing joke in the testing community, and although today’s tests are much stricter, the idea of finding those mileage-boosting hacks hasn’t quite gone away.

6. The "Average Driver" Myth

Mileage tests are designed to represent an "average driver". But here’s the thing: that driver—the one who never accelerates too hard, never brakes too suddenly, and never drives too fast—is a mythical being. Testers joke that if this person existed in real life, they’d probably be the least fun driver on any road trip, and yet, their mild-mannered ways are what determine the mileage figures printed on new cars.

7. Pizza Run Gone Wrong

There’s a classic story of a tester wanting to prove a car’s real-world mileage by timing a pizza delivery run. The plan backfired. The pizza was late, the mileage was terrible, and the driver realized that real-world driving—with its stops, starts, and sudden lane changes—is nothing like the perfectly controlled environment of a lab. It was a reminder that the lab is neat and tidy, but the real world is chaos.

How Mileage Gets Reported Today

When you see those mileage numbers on a car, they’re based on a mix of city (55%) and highway (45%) driving. The EPA sets strict guidelines that all manufacturers must follow, so every vehicle is tested under the same conditions. Of course, actual driving—like dealing with traffic, weather, and personal driving habits—can make a difference,

Updates to EPA Testing (2008 and Beyond)

In 2008, the EPA realized that their old testing methods didn’t always reflect modern driving. To fix that, they updated the rules that every automaker has to follow, making the tests more realistic. Now, they take into account a lot more real-world factors, such as:

  • Higher Speeds and Aggressive Driving: The tests now simulate faster speeds and quicker acceleration, reflecting how most of us actually drive on highways and in traffic.

  • Cold Weather: Cold temperatures can impact fuel efficiency, especially in gas-powered cars. The updated tests consider this, giving you more accurate numbers for winter driving.

  • Air Conditioning Usage: Running the A/C can increase fuel consumption, and now that’s included in the EPA’s tests, so the numbers reflect what happens on a hot summer day.

  • Shorter Trips and Idle Time: Stop-and-go traffic and quick errands are part of the new testing protocol, which better reflects typical city driving.

Thanks to these updates—and the fact that all manufacturers have to use the same guidelines—the fuel economy ratings on new cars are more accurate than ever. While real-world results might vary a bit depending on how and where you drive, these numbers give you a much better idea of what to expect

2WD vs. 4WD Which Truck Tows More

2WD vs. 4WD: Which Truck Tows More?

When it comes to choosing the right truck for towing, one of the most common questions is whether a two-wheel drive (2WD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) truck can tow more. While both options have their advantages, the general rule is that 2WD trucks tend to have a slightly higher towing capacity than their 4WD counterparts, thanks to their lighter weight and mechanical simplicity. But does that mean 2WD is always the better option? Let’s dive into the key differences between these two configurations and help you decide which is best for your towing needs.

Why 2WD Trucks Tow More

In most truck models, the 2WD version offers a bit more towing capacity than the 4WD model. Here’s why:

  1. Weight Reduction: A 4WD system comes with extra components—like a transfer case, additional driveshafts, and differentials—that add extra weight to the vehicle. This added weight means less capacity is available for towing when compared to the lighter 2WD version.

  2. Mechanical Simplicity: 2WD trucks only need to deliver power to two wheels (usually the rear), which reduces mechanical complexity and leaves more of the engine's power available for towing.

For instance:

  • The Ford F-150 2WD can tow up to 14,000 pounds, whereas the 4WD version has a slightly lower towing limit, around 13,700 pounds.

  • Similarly, a 2WD Chevy Silverado 1500 offers higher towing capacity than its 4WD sibling.

At Autowest of Plainwell, we stock a range of both 2WD and 4WD trucks so you can pick the best option to match your towing needs. Visit us at AutowestPlainwell.com to explore our selection of pre-owned trucks with high towing capacities.

When to Consider a 4WD Truck for Towing

Even though 2WD trucks usually offer a higher towing capacity, 4WD trucks shine in several specific towing situations. You might want to opt for a 4WD truck if:

  1. You Need Off-Road Capability: If you frequently tow on uneven terrain, dirt roads, or off-road conditions, the extra traction of 4WD is invaluable. Whether it’s towing a boat to a remote lake or hauling a camper off the beaten path, 4WD ensures you maintain control on rugged surfaces.

  2. Inclement Weather Conditions: Snow, ice, mud, and heavy rain can make towing dangerous with a 2WD truck. The all-weather capability of a 4WD truck provides much-needed stability and traction, making it safer to tow heavy loads in adverse conditions.

  3. Towing on Steep Hills: When pulling heavy trailers or equipment up steep inclines, 4WD trucks give you the torque and traction needed to avoid wheel spin and keep control of your load.

For customers near Plainwell, MI, who need reliable towing trucks for all terrains and weather, Autowest of Plainwell has a variety of 4WD trucks in our pre-owned inventory. Whether you need power for off-road towing or hauling in extreme conditions, we can help you find the perfect match.

Towing Capacity by Make and Model

Let’s take a look at some popular truck brands and how they compare in terms of towing capacity for 2WD vs. 4WD models:

  • Ford F-Series: The Ford F-250 Super Duty is a heavy hitter in towing capacity. The 2WD version edges out the 4WD version with a slightly higher capacity, but the 4WD excels in off-road towing.

  • Ram 3500: Known for its massive towing capacity, the Ram 3500 2WD can tow up to 37,100 pounds, compared to the slightly lower capacity of the 4WD version.

  • Chevy Silverado 1500: As with the other brands, the 2WD Silverado tends to offer a higher towing limit than its 4WD equivalent, but the difference is marginal.

  • GMC Sierra 3500HD: Another excellent truck for heavy-duty towing, the 2WD Sierra offers a small boost in towing power over the 4WD model.

To view our inventory of trucks, including the Ford F-Series, Ram 3500, Chevy Silverado, and more, visit Autowest of Plainwell or stop by our dealership at 1208 M89 West, Plainwell, MI 49080. We have a wide range of pre-owned trucks ready to tackle your towing needs.

Additional Resources to Compare Towing Capacity

If you're looking for more detailed comparisons between 2WD and 4WD trucks, check out these trusted resources:

  • Edmunds: Offers expert reviews and detailed breakdowns of towing capacity for different truck models.

  • Kelley Blue Book: Provides comprehensive data on truck performance, including towing and payload capacities.

  • Autotrader: A great resource for comparing used truck listings by towing specs.

Making the Right Choice for Your Towing Needs

In conclusion, if your primary concern is maximum towing capacity on paved roads or flat terrain, a 2WD truck will generally give you the edge. However, if you frequently tow in off-road conditions or face adverse weather, a 4WD truck will provide better control and safety, even if it sacrifices a little towing capacity.

At Autowest of Plainwell, we are here to help you make the best decision for your towing needs. Whether you're looking for a 2WD powerhouse or a versatile 4WD workhorse, we have a variety of pre-owned trucks with different drivetrain options to suit your lifestyle. Used Car Buying Checklist

Used Car Buying Checklist

With the average price of new vehicles rising to record levels, it’s never been a better time to purchase a used vehicle. However, you want to make sure that you purchase a quality used vehicle that is worth your money. That’s why it is important that you properly inspect any used vehicle before you make a purchasing decision.

At Auto West, we have created this helpful checklist that will allow you to properly check any used vehicle.

Pre-Inspection Checklist

Before you step inside any used vehicle, you want to take a look at the vehicle’s record to make sure it is worth a further inspection.

Milage

You want to make sure that there is not excessive mileage on a vehicle relative to its age. For instance, a 3 year old vehicle should not have more than 60,000 miles on it. Milage is a clear indicator on how hard the vehicle has been driven over a certain period of time.

Now, there are certain brands that are more reliable than others. For instance, a Toyota Camry with high mileage can be more reliable than many other brand vehicles with less miles on them. Just be sure to note the mileage before you continue on with the inspection.

Smog certificate

In Michigan, all used vehicles must have a smog certificate. Therefore, you will want to make sure that the used vehicle has passed its most recent smog inspection.

Vehicle history report

Has the vehicle ever been in a flood? Has the vehicle ever been totaled? These events can radically affect the value and the drive quality of the vehicle. Getting a Carfax report can let you know if the vehicle has been in any accident Also, a car history report can verify mileage and ownership history.

Maintenance records

How well has the vehicle been maintained. A used vehicle that has up-to-date maintenance records is going to be a better choice, even if you have to pay a little more. A well maintained vehicle may save you from costly repairs.

What should you look for in maintenance records? Be sure that the vehicle has received an oil change every 3,000 to 7,500 miles. Also check for consistent filter changes (Cabin air filter, engine filter, oil filter, and fuel filter). Finally, make sure that the vehicle has received its interval maintenance services.

Legal ownership

Make sure that the person or dealership who is selling the used vehicle, has the title for the vehicle. If you purchase a vehicle that is not properly titled, then you may have issues registering the vehicle with the state.

Exterior Inspection

After you have completed a pre-inspection checklist, it is time to do a “walk around” and check the exterior of the vehicle. Here is what you should prioritize during your exterior inspection.

Wheels & Tires

Since the vehicle’s tires maintain contact with the road, they should be carefully checked. Be sure to check the tread depth level of each tire. Also, make sure that all of the tires match. After that, inspect the side wall tires for any signs of damage such as cracking or bubbling.

After you have checked the tires, be sure to inspect the wheels. Make sure all the wheels match and that they are free of damage.

Panel gaps

Next you will want to check the panel gaps. If you notice any inconsistent panel gaps, then the vehicle may have been in an accident. Be sure to compare any panel gap inconsistencies with accident reports from the car vehicle report. Some of the most common areas for vehicle accidents include front and rear bumpers. Pay special attention to these panels.

Lights

Check all the exterior lights to ensure that they are not damaged and that they are working properly. This includes the headlights, taillights, fog lights and any aftermarket lights. If the lights are dim, this may not be an issue with the lights themselves. Dim lights could be an indicator of a weak battery.

Paint color

Depending on the age of the vehicle, the quality of the paint color will differ. What you want to look out for is any uneven wear in the paint. This could be an indicator that a repair was made on the vehicle.

Scratches and dents

Also, be sure to check for any scratches and dents. Door dings and minor scratches shouldn’t be a “deal breaker” since they could be easily repaired.

Glass

Finally, be sure to check for any chips or cracks on the glass. This includes all the passenger glass windows, the rear window and the windshield.

Interior Inspection

After you have inspected the exterior, you will want to step inside the vehicle and check out the interior. At this time, you will also want to turn on the vehicle.

Odors

Right when you step into the vehicle, check if any type of odor immediately hits you. Do you smell mold? The vehicle may have been flooded. If you smell tobacco, then the previous owner may have been a smoker.

Instruments

When starting up the vehicle, make sure that all the instruments are working properly. Be sure to check for any warning lights that come on when you immediately start up the vehicle.

Infotainment System

Check the infotainment system and make sure that the screen is working properly. If the vehicle has a touchscreen, check the response time after touching certain areas of the screen.

Audio System

Turn on the audio system and make sure that you are getting clear reception from each speaker. You should be able to change the balance to get a better feel for each speaker inside the cabin.

Upholstery

You will want to check the seating and look for any signs of excessive wear. Also, check for any cracks or breaks on any leather seating surfaces. Of course, older vehicles will have more worn upholstery. However, vehicles that are less than four years old, should have excellent upholstery.

Driver controls

Make sure that all the driver controls are working properly such as the steering wheel controls, bluetooth, paddle shifters, and any buttons. If you notice any non-function controls, then the vehicle may have been in an accident.

Mechanical Inspection

While the vehicle is idling, you will want to check out the mechanical parts of the vehicle. Even if you are not a “gear head,” you should be able to check simple mechanical features of any used vehicle.

Fluids

Used vehicles require several fluids in order to function properly. Be sure to check out the engine oil level as well as the coolant, transmission fluid, and brake fluid.

Noises

Do you hear any strange noises while the vehicle is idling? Be sure to listen for any rattling, squeaking, knocking or screeching. If you hear these noises coming from the engine, then you may have to contend with major repairs if you purchase the vehicle.

Shifting

Operate the shifter while the vehicle is in idle. Be sure to check for any knocking or unusual noises to ensure that the transmission is in good condition.

Warning Lights

Be sure to check for any warning lights to come on while the vehicle’s engine is operating. Any amber or led lights on the dashboard needs to be addressed before you purchase the vehicle.

Drive Test

After you have inspected the interior of the vehicle, it is time to take the vehicle for a drive test. This is one of the most important parts of any used car inspection. Here is what you should check while driving the vehicle.

Steering

Pay attention to the steering. Do you hear any usual sounds coming from the wheels? This could be a wheel alignment issue. Also, if the steering is stiff, then there could be an issue with the power steering including old power steering fluid.

Acceleration

Be sure to check how well the vehicle accelerates. Even if you are not purchasing a performance vehicle, you want to make sure that the vehicle experiences smooth acceleration. Any hesitation during acceleration could be an issue with the transmission or the engine.

Driving noises

Be sure to listen to any unusual noises while driving the vehicle. For instance, do you hear anything strange as the vehicle switches gears? Do you hear any rattling when the vehicle is at highway speed? Be sure to make note of any noises.

Climate controls

Be sure to check the climate controls while the vehicle is on the road. Is the air conditioner blowing cool air through all the vents? Are there any strange noises while the climate control system is on. Also be sure to check the heater as well.
